How to Clean Up in Trivia

Trivia geek prizesWhen Thursday night rolls around, I am lucky to compete for chintzy prizes and bragging rights with a well-rounded team of geeks. Geek pride abounds at Geeks Who Drink trivia night at the Highliner Pub in the Interbay neighborhood of Seattle.

Our team’s sweet spot is being diverse. If we have all six nerdy, data-loving, TV-watching, news-reading, movie-quoting members represented, be prepared to lose. Or rock-paper-scissors for the ultimate glory if there is a tie. We are a rowdy bunch, who doesn’t take “no” for an answer. We love arguing over details like Queen Elizabeth needing “II” as part of her name to properly get credit. When our quiz honor is on the line, every member is all in, all the time.

In all seriousness, I love trivia because it motivates me to keep current, plus I get the occasional credit for all the worthless priceless movie dialogue that rattles around in my brain. Why else would I have sat through It’s Pat, the Movie? Actually, that’s a dark, sad movie I never want to think of again, but you get the point.

Trivia helps me stay fresh in my creative conceptual work, and it’s a great way to enjoy a competitive atmosphere with friends. Although this week, we shamed ourselves by clinching the “Thank God we didn’t come in last place” loser bowl prize, we’re still out there to give the other teams hell, week in and week out. And honestly, if you’re not up-to-date on current events, pop culture, or the Kardashians, you are missing out.

Track my team’s triumphs (we’re always the ones with the super cool, topical team name):
